According to tradition, Bishop Aubert of Avranches built the first church on a rocky tidal island off the Normandy coast in 708 AD, dedicating it to the Archangel Michael. From 966 onward, the dukes of Normandy supported the further construction of a Benedictine abbey at this site, which became a center of learning across Europe.
