Allegany County is full of interesting towns with tons of history. Many of them are found along the winding Genesee River just down the hill from Fillory.
Cuba is a town next to Rushford. The two towns make up the Cuba Rushford Central School District for kids, K-12. Cuba is home to the Cuba Cheese Company, which once was large and important enough to actually set the price of cheese up and down the East Coast of the United States. They still make the cheese in Cuba, though production is shifting to nearby Franklinville, NY. Still the town boasts the fabulous Cuba Cheese Shoppe, where you will find a huge variety of cheese (of course) but also jars of gourmet sauces, pastas, bottles of hot sauces, candy, and all sorts of treats. There's even a Cuba Cheese Museum, and check out the Cuba Opera House. It's a quaint town, and host to the closest hospital to Fillory. Oh yeah, and Charles Ingalls, from Little House on the Prairie, was born and raised here.

Moss Lake (bog) is an 84-acre site containing a 15-acre glacial kettle lake located just outside Rushford, in the town of Caneadea. It's a nature preserve and beautiful any time of year.

Podonque Cemetery is an easy casual walk away from Fillory. The final resting place of many of the town's founders is very well maintained and quite lovely, surrounded by farmland. Notice the pretty iron gates at the entrance.

Swift Hill State Forest covers a total of 1,569 acres and contains a mixture of native hardwood species and planted conifers. It's a great place for hiking, camping, bird watching, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and it's located just a few miles up the road from Fillory.

According to Google Maps, it takes just 22 minutes to drive the 17 miles to the south entrance of Letchworth State Park, "The Grand Canyon of the East," where you'll find the Glen Iris Inn, overlooking the magnificent Middle Falls on the Genesee River and the breathtaking beauty of the gorge, cliffs, and railroad bridge.

The BKBHOF is the only institution dedicated to remembering, as well as honoring, bare knuckle boxers, past and present, and their supporters.

Houghton University is a private Christian liberal arts school in Houghton, NY, founded in 1883 by Willard J. Houghton. It's affiliated with the Wesleyan Church and serves roughly 1000 students and has 54 degree majors. The college hosts occasional concerts and events, and the cafeteria is highly recommended for quality and is sometimes open to the public. The campus makes a nice place for a stroll, including the coffee shop and art studio on Main Street. Also, the Equestrian Center is located very close to Fillory and is worth checking out.

Beef Haus is a mainstay in the town with a focus on - you guessed it - beef. But they offer a full menu with many delicious options at affordable prices. L'Italia, a relative newcomer in town, serves upscale Italian in a casual environment; look for pizzas, pasta, sandwiches, steak and seafood with a full service bar.

Downtown Rushford's only restaurant, and you will be surprised how good the food is. Excellent breakfast items, great burgers and sandwiches, as well as a full range of short order selections.
